Glycyrrhiza glabra

Licorice grows wild in southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia, but it is now extensively cultivated. It is propagated by dividing the roots in autumn or spring. The root of 3–4-year-old plants is unearthed in late autumn.

Decorative: Add a handful to potpourri mixes for texture, color and scent.

Culinary Make strong hot water infusions to produce syrups, tonics and teas. Licorice root is also used to flavor homemade soda and beer.

Aromatic Tincture for use in perfumery.

Safety Do not use long-term or take in high dosages due to the risk of potassium depletion. If you have a known heart condition or high blood pressure, check with your doctor before using this herb.
